    About Ambulances

Taken from the Latin word “ambulare,” meaning to walk or move about, an ambulance is a specially equipped vehicle that transports patients to hospitals for treatment. The creation of the ambulance came from the need for armies to transport their wounded on the battlefield. Early ambulances were litters carried by people or horses, later moving on to horse-drawn vans, and eventually motorized trucks.

Modern ambulances take many forms around the world according to the local landscape and infrastructure. In addition to trucks, some places employ boats, helicopters, ATVs, motorcycles, bikes, and other modes of transportation. In North America, most ambulances are medium- or light-duty trucks or vans with specialized bodies.

    Buying Used Ambulances

When ambulances come up for sale on the used market, they may still have some of their emergency markings and lights. In most cases with used ambulances, the seller has removed the siren and made the emergency lights inoperable, but if not, they will need to be removed along with any remaining markings if the ambulance will be used for purposes other than emergency services, as it is illegal for non-emergency personnel to impersonate first responders.

Many ambulances are built with van bodies or pickup-style cabs on a chassis with a custom box compartment. These may not require a Class 4 driver’s license to operate, depending on the province, and use gas rather than diesel to make them easier and cheaper to operate. Others are built on larger diesel truck chassis that provide greater horsepower and require a Class 4 driver’s licence to operate in most provinces.

As ambulances have to be able to operate during all kinds of weather and on a variety of road conditions, they are very durable and may be equipped with features such as separate temperature controls for the cab and rear areas, power heated mirrors, lighted cabinets, pass-through storage, an on-board compressor, and more.

    Find The Right Ambulance

Many of the used ambulances for sale on MarketBook.ca were manufactured after 2000, and although their ambulance days may be over, there are still a lot of miles left in many of these trucks. Used ambulances can be put to a variety of uses, such as a service truck, as they often come with lots of internal and exterior storage compartments for tools and equipment and can be a cost-effective alternative to purchasing a purpose-built service truck.

You’ll find a variety of new and used ambulances for sale through MarketBook.ca from major manufacturers such as Chevrolet, Ford, Freightliner, and International.
