The applicator applies liquid nitrogen in the form of anhydrous ammonia, which is pulled behind the implement in highly pressurized tanks. As the solution leaves the tank and is injected in the soil, it reacts with available moisture, making it available for absorption.
Applicators typically use a multi-section jointed frame so as to closely follow ground contours for accurate, efficient placement in no-till and other tillage conditions. A front hitch connects to the tractor, while rear hitches accommodate one or more anhydrous tanks and possibly other implements for seedbed preparation. Control features often include section shut-off, application rate control, and adjustable depth control.
