    About Crawler Carriers

Crawler carriers are highly versatile machines used in a wide range of industries, including construction, forestry, oil and gas, and utilities. They typically have a maximum load capacity ranging from 2,270 to 22,700 kilograms (5,000 to 50,000 pounds), although some models fall outside that range. Most models consist of an enclosed cab, or at least a rollover protection system (ROPS)-certified cage or canopy, on a chassis equipped with a dump bed and a pair of rubber tracks.

Many manufacturers offer a variety of optional features to improve operator comfort or to adapt these machines for use a specific purpose. Some models, for example, feature air conditioning and heating to enable using the crawler carrier year-round regardless of weather conditions.

    Common Applications

Crawler carriers with dump beds generally carry out a role similar to that of dump trucks, but thanks to their rubber tracks, they can traverse difficult terrain and get to hard-to-reach areas. This makes them well-suited for use in the forestry industry, for example, as they can climb steep inclines and carry tools and materials to and from the jobsite. Some models have a 360-degree rotating platform above the tracks that comes in handy when operating in tight spaces and facilitates simpler loading and unloading without moving the machine.

As mentioned above, crawler carriers can be customized by adding such features as a flatbed, crane, bucket, or drop-side box, or even an enclosed compartment complete with benches, seatbelts, and windows for transporting a work crew. Some specialized models are outfitted with a flatbed and a crane located behind the cab to enable loading and unloading cargo without the need for a second piece of equipment.

One of the more popular models on MarketBook.ca is the Morooka MST2200 crawler carrier, which is available in several variations, including the popular MST2200VD. Measuring 6.1 metres (20.17 feet) long, 2.9 m (9.5 ft) wide, and 3.2 m (10.4 ft) tall, the MST2200VD weighs 14,433 kilograms (31,820 pounds) and has a maximum load capacity of 11,002 kg (24,255 lbs). The MST2200VD is powered by a Cat C7.1 T4 Final engine rated for 250 horsepower (186 kilowatts) and a hydrostatic transmission. The MST2200VDR offers similar specs but has an upper structure that rotates a full 360 degrees.
