    About Header Trailers

Header trailers, also referred to as “header transports” or “header haulers,” are used on farms to carry removable combine headers, draper and grain platforms, corn heads, and other similar implements. Combine headers are wide and heavy, which makes it difficult to transport them, but these trailers simplify the process of hauling headers from the farm to the field or from one field to another while pulled by a truck or tractor.

    Common Header Trailer Features

Most header trailers have a single front axle and then either single or dual axles in the rear. They have rest brackets, rest bars, and support tubes, many of which are adjustable, that are typically used in combination with tie-downs or ratchet systems to secure the combine header during transport. Many manufacturers offer telescoping couplers, or tongues, that increase the distance between the header on the trailer and the transport vehicle to increase turning radius and prevent damage to equipment.

    Popular Brands & Models

Unverferth is a popular header trailer manufacturer, with its Fieldrunner and Roadrunner header transport lines. Available in a standard or all-wheel-steer (AWS) configuration, the Fieldrunner is ideal for local hauling, while the Roadrunner features a tri-cycle front axle that improves maneuverability, torsion axles in the front and rear, and tires rated for highway speeds for longer-distance transport. The Fieldrunner is available in lengths from 25 to 48 feet (7.6 to 14.6 meters), and the Roadrunner ranges from roughly 42 to 60 ft (12.8 to 18.3 m).

The Fieldrunner also has a rear-oscillating axle that keeps all four wheels on the ground regardless of terrain, a 12-ft (3.7-m) tongue that enables a 180-degree turning radius, an LED lighting kit, a corrosion-resistant powder-coat finish, a rear hitch for hauling multiple headers, and tool-free adjustment. Options include a 16-ft (4.9-m) tongue, larger tires, and landing pads for the upper rest bar to further protect equipment.

Other popular header trailer brands include E-Z Trail, which sells a line of Head Haulers ranging from 21 to 42 ft (6.4 to 12.8 m) in length, and J&M, which sells the 4-Wheel Steer (4WS) Series of header transports, with maximum weight capacities ranging from 7,500 and 13,000 pounds (3,402 and 5,897 kilograms).
