    About Transfer Dump Trucks

A transfer dump truck is used to transport a payload of sand, asphalt, stone, and other materials from one location to another and then dump it. Other dump truck types include standard dump trucks, off-road dump trucks, and trucks with side- or bottom-dump semitrailers.

    Peterbilt 389 Transfer Dump Truck

As with standard dump trucks, transfer dump trucks (also known as “dump transfer trucks”) are available in various lengths and configurations, and with a variety of features and options to best match each truck to the load(s) it will be tasked with transporting.

On MarketBook.ca, you’ll most often find these trucks available in sizes rated for gross vehicle weights (GVWs) in excess of 11,800 kilograms (26,000 pounds).

    Transfer Dump Truck Operation

Transfer dump trucks are similar in appearance to standard dump trucks that use hydraulics to lift a main dump body mounted to the truck frame for dumping. A transfer dump truck configuration is similar to that of a “truck and pup” configuration where a standard dump truck pulls a pup, or dump trailer, that has its own hydraulic hoist to lift the trailer’s cargo box and dump the load. In a transfer dump truck arrangement, however, the pup trailer lacks its own hydraulics. Instead, the dump trailer is essentially a moveable cargo container that weighs less than the truck’s main dump body.

Upon arrival at a jobsite, the driver disconnects the dump trailer, empties the main dump body, and then backs the truck up to the dump trailer. The cargo container is rolled along the trailer frame and into place in the now-empty main dump body with help either from a motor or hydraulics. After dumping the cargo container’s load, the driver then backs the truck up again to the trailer and rolls the cargo container back into place on the dump trailer. Transfer dump trucks generally need to be parked on a uniformly flat surface to transfer the cargo container to the main dump body and lock it into place.

In a triple transfer train arrangement, a standard dump truck pulls two cargo containers. Such arrangements allow one truck to haul different materials that aren’t meant for mixing. The main dump body, for example, could haul sand while the two cargo containers could haul different colors of decorative rocks.
