Due to their open design, flatbed trailers are generally a good fit for hauling oversized and overweight and specialty construction, landscaping, and farm equipment and other nonstandard load types. Their design also makes them somewhat easier to load than enclosed trailers, as forklifts and other loading equipment can approach any point along both sides of the trailer as well as the rear. Flatbeds often utilize standard fifth-wheel hitches and come in a variety of maximum load ratings that in some cases reach 54,000 kilograms (120,000 pounds).

Design & Features

Constructed of steel, aluminum, or a combination of both and with wood or aluminum decks, flatbeds are designed to make it easy to load and unload them from either side without requiring the use of a loading dock. Some flatbed trailers come equipped with a raised lip along the edges that helps keep cargo in place, dropsides that fall away when ready to load or unload cargo, or removable stakes and stake pockets and/or built-in winch tracks situated along the side rails.

Because flatbeds lack a cover, however, operators must ensure loads are strapped or roped down using tie-down anchors (which may be either single-point or moveable) or other securing mechanisms. Tarps are often needed to ensure that cargo is protected against inclement weather and road debris.
