Read More (About GSI)Although Craig Sloan established GSI in 1972 in a 464-square-metre (5,000-square-foot) garage with just three employees in tow, the company’s history stretches back much further. During the Great Depression in the 1930s, the Sloan family recognized a need to supply Midwestern growers with durable, affordable farm equipment.
Today, GSI is part of the GSI Group and manufactures various lineups of storage, conditioning, and material-handling equipment and structures for grain. Agco acquired the GSI Group in 2011, adding it to a roster of brands that also includes Challenger, Fendt, Massey Ferguson, RoGator, TerraGator, Valtra, Sunflower, and White Planters.
GSI Group also develops swine and poultry production equipment under the Automated Production, Cimbria, C-Lines, Cumberland, DMC, Farmer Automatic, Tecno, USC, and Zimmerman brands.
In the early 1970s, the company went to work developing and manufacturing different types of corrugated steel storage bins. Today, GSI claims to be the world’s largest maker of steel farm bins, commercial storage grain bins, and grain silos, offering its products and services in more than 70 countries. The company’s product lines include unstiffened and stiffened grain bins ranging from 1,600- to 1.9-million-bushel capacities.
GSI also sells flat-bottom bins, hopper tanks, bin unloading equipment, fans and heaters, temporary storage, TopDry bins, InterSystems-brand modular bolted bins, spreaders, and X-Series ladders and platforms. Other products include in-bin dryers and portable, stack, and modular continuous-flow dryers, as well as bucket elevators, chain and belt conveyors, distributors, gravity screens, bulk weighers, and QuickBolt Towers and Catwalks.
Prior to being acquired by Agco, GSI carried out numerous acquisitions of its own that expanded the company’s operations. The first of these occurred in 1988 with the acquisition of Automated Production, which bolstered GSI’s swine equipment offerings. Following the Agco acquisition, GSI acquired Johnson Systems (JSI) in 2013 and InterSystems in 2014.
Headquartered in Assumption, Illinois, GSI Group states it now has roughly 93,000 sq m (1 million sq ft) of manufacturing space in its facilities around the world, which include facilities in Canada as well as numerous U.S. locations, Malaysia, South Africa, Mexico, Brazil, and China. In 2014, the company opened a new manufacturing plant in Hungary.
