RentThe development of log trailers began in the early 1900s and provided early lumber crews with an alternative to relying on waterways, steam-powered locomotives, or and horse- or oxen-led teams to transport logs.
Read More (About Log Semitrailers)Early timber crews relied on waterways, teams of horses or oxen, and steam-powered locomotives to transport logs they’d cut from a forest to the mill. The process changed in the early 1900s, though, with the development of logging trucks and log trailers. Early log trailers often had steel tires, and the logging trucks that were used to pull them had small engines. Over time, however, experience in moving logs prompted such refinements as oversized braking systems, rubber tires, and more powerful engines and transmissions, which eventually allowed for the transport of trees that were located deeper in forests and typically farther away from waterways or railroads.
Some log trailers come with winches or onboard cranes, while others are used alongside such other logging equipment as feller bunchers, skidders, and loaders for easier loading and unloading. All are designed to accommodate logs of various lengths and have reinforced beams and cross-members, as well as numerous side posts to contain the logs.
Leading manufacturer Pitts, for example, offers its LT40- and LP40-series log trailers starting at just over 8,600 pounds, with gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWRs) up to 80,000 lbs. The manufacturer also builds PT22 pup trailers with adjustable lengths ranging from 22 to 33 feet (6.7 to 10 metres). Pitts trailers often come with DOT-approved headboards to protect the driver, Grote Ultra Blue wiring harnesses, and LED lights. They can be spec’d with a variety of optional equipment, such as electronic or air scales, grapple bars, air-ride suspensions, and slide-able bolsters.
You’ll find new and used log semitrailers available for sale on MarketBook.ca from such leading manufacturers as BWS, Deloupe, Doepker, Manac, McLendon, Pitts, Viking, and others.
