    About Off-Highway Trucks

The off-highway trucks market includes articulated dump trucks (ADTs), end dump trucks, and rigid (or rock) trucks most commonly used by construction and mining operations to haul rock, debris, and other materials. ADTs can be distinguished from other types of off-highway trucks by the mechanism between the cab and the dump body bends or swivels, allowing the truck to make tighter turns and operate on uneven terrain. The trade-off is that ADTs often have lower maximum payload capacities.

Rigid dump trucks, which are sometimes referred to as “haul trucks,” typically have a lip on the dump body that hangs over the cab for added protection. They can handle larger payloads than ADTs, but that also makes them heavier and often less manoeuvrable. For that reason, articulated dump trucks are ideal for tighter worksites and/or sites with challenging terrain, while rigids are better-suited for large mining operations with clear paths and relatively flat driving surfaces.

Articulated and rigid dump trucks do have a few things in common; both can often be purchased as a bare chassis or with a pre-configured dump body. They may or may not have a rear tailgate and are equipped with one or more hydraulic rams that lift up the front of the dump body to tip materials out of the back for easy unloading. End dump trucks differ a bit in that they also have hydraulic rams but the lifting mechanism is sometimes located farther back on the chassis over top of the rear-most wheels.

    Common Examples

The payload capacities of off-highway trucks vary from around 23 to 363 tonnes (25 to 400 U.S. tons). There are, of course, outliers, such as the massive BELAZ-75710 mining dump truck with its 810-t (893-U.S.-t) gross weight and 450-t (496-U.S.-t) payload capacity.

Caterpillar is a popular off-highway truck manufacturer that sells both articulated and rigid dump trucks. One example of a Cat ADT is the Cat 740, which, depending on the exact configuration, has a rated payload capacity of 38 t (42 U.S. t), a struck capacity of 18 cubic metres (23.5 cubic yards), and a heaped capacity of 23 cu m (30 cu yds). Volvo is another popular brand that manufactures ADTs such as the A40, with payload capacities from 25 to 55 t (28 to 61 U.S. t) and heaped dump body capacities ranging from 15 to 34 cu m (20 to 44 cu yds).

Caterpillar’s rigid dump truck portfolio shows the true range of off-highway and mining trucks. At the lower end, there’s the Cat 770 with its 38-t (42.1-U.S.-t) payload capacity. Up from there is the Cat 777 with an 89-t (98.4-U.S.-t) capacity, and at the top is the Cat 798 with a maximum capacity of 372 t (410 U.S. t). Caterpillar is one example of a manufacturer that offers its off-highway trucks either as bare chassis or with pre-configured body options.
