Read More (About Less Than 40-Horsepower Tractors)Tractors used to mow smaller acreages and perform lighter-duty jobs around the farm or homestead, such as hauling, grading, tilling, gardening, landscaping, and so on, are often equipped with engines rated for less than 40 horsepower. Featuring lawn and garden, subcompact, and smaller-frame compact models, these tractors are generally small and narrow enough to manoeuvre and work in tighter spaces and then park in a garage or small shed.
While they lack the engine and power take-off (PTO) power to handle field work and other tasks that large-scale agriculture operations require, numerous subcompact tractors generate enough power with their gas or diesel engines to support some front loader and backhoe work and small-cart hauling. Subcompacts from John Deere, KIOTI, Kubota, New Holland, and other leading brands are typically a solid choice for working anywhere from one to five or more acres of land, depending on the application.
In addition to enclosed cabs, Tier 4-compliant engines, foldable ROPS (rollover protection systems), hydrostatic transmissions, four-wheel drive, cruise control, tilt and power steering, and lift capacities exceeding 680 kilograms (1,500 pounds), tractors in this size class may also offer multiple options for mounting a mower deck and connecting attachments and implements.
John Deere’s sub-40-HP tractors, for example, offer an Auto-Connect deck system for mounting a mower deck in less than five minutes, a Quik-Park Loader System to simplify attaching a front loader, the Quik-Tatch front-hitch system, and a Quik-Knect System to attach PTO-driven implements. KIOTI subcompacts provide a single-lever joystick for front loader control, along with such features as fully adjustable suspension seating, an intuitive instrument panel, and multiple tyre options (agriculture, turf, and industrial). Elsewhere, Kubota’s B50 and BX80 Series of compact and subcompact tractors variously feature a low-clearance ROPS that doesn’t requiring folding to enter a shed, a flat operation station with ergonomically placed levers and instrument panel to simplify operation, and a heated cab option to make winter work more comfortable.
While classifications differ from manufacturer to manufacturer, common tractor categories include lawn and garden, subcompact, compact, utility, farm, and row crop. Tractors on MarketBook are organised into four horsepower classes besides the Less Than 40 Horsepower category:
40 to 99 horsepower. Featuring compact, midsized, and utility tractors used on small and midsized agriculture operations, these tractors are often equipped with a front loader for hauling rocks, feed, and other materials.
100 to 174 horsepower. Tractors in this class are sometimes called “farm tractors” for all the jobs they can handle around midsized and large ag operations. Models from Case IH’s Puma, Maxxum, and Vestrum series designed for livestock, dairy, mixed-crop, field, and loader work are examples.
175 to 299 horsepower. Offering multiple transmission options, precision farming technologies, larger fuels tanks, fuel-efficient engines, wider tyres, multi-control armrests, and ultra-comfortable enclosed cabs, these tractors can handle nearly any job or implement.
300 or greater horsepower. Also known as “row crop tractors,” these tractors are the most expensive and most powerful, feature-packed, and versatile of all. With models like Case IH’s Steiger Quadtrac and the New Holland T9.700 at the high end, these tractors are designed for large-scale commercial farm, hay, dairy, livestock, and similar operations.
You'll also find a number of new and used orchard and vineyard tractors for sale on MarketBook. Orchard and vineyard tractors are typically narrow-width models with other optimisations such as low centres of gravity for stable operation on slopes and protection from branches and vines.
MarketBook offers a huge selection of new and used tractors for sale in the Less Than 40 Horsepower category, with popular manufacturers including International, John Deere, KIOTI, Kubota, Mahindra, Massey Ferguson, and New Holland.
