About Less Than 40-Horsepower Tractors

Tractors used to mow smaller acreages and perform lighter-duty jobs around the farm or homestead, such as hauling, grading, tilling, gardening, landscaping, and so on, are often equipped with engines rated for less than 40 horsepower. Featuring lawn and garden, subcompact, and smaller-frame compact models, these tractors are generally small and narrow enough to manoeuvre and work in tighter spaces and then park in a garage or small shed.

While they lack the engine and power take-off (PTO) power to handle field work and other tasks that large-scale agriculture operations require, numerous subcompact tractors generate enough power with their gas or diesel engines to support some front loader and backhoe work and small-cart hauling. Subcompacts from John Deere, KIOTI, Kubota, New Holland, and other leading brands are typically a solid choice for working anywhere from one to five or more acres of land, depending on the application.
