The Caterpillar XQ35 is a “rental-ready,” towable, 60Hz generator set with a prime power rating of 35 kilovolt-amperes (effectively 27 electrical kilowatts) and a standby rating of 38 kVA (30 ekW). The voltage levels it supplies are single-phase 240/120V, three-phase 208/120V and 480/277V, and optionally three-phase 600/349V. The genset can run for more than 24 hours on a tank of fuel at 100% of its prime load (more than 20 hours on standby power). At the same time, its Tier 4 Final-compliant diesel engine has a quiet 63 deciBels (adjusted) sound rating at 23 feet (7 meters).

    Compact Power

The XQ35’s powder-coated steel enclosure measures 63.7 inches (1,618 millimeters) high, 41.4 in (1,052 mm) wide, and 91.3 in (2,319 mm) long. The enclosed gen set weighs 2,215 pounds (1,005 kilograms) with all fluids except fuel. The optional trailer—which is available with electric or hydraulic brakes, as well as no brakes at all—brings the weight up to 2,555 to 2,585 lbs (1,154 to 1,171 kg). The width of the trailer is 66.4 in (1,687 mm).

The Caterpillar XQ35 uses a Tier 4 Final Cat C2.2T diesel engine that’s CARB-certified. (Photo courtesy of Caterpillar.)

The XQ35 gets its power from a common rail direct injection, inline four-cylinder Cat C2.2T engine. The electronically governed diesel is CARB-certified for non-road mobile applications at all 60Hz ratings. Cat made the aftertreatment of the motor maintenance-free, meeting Tier 4 Final emissions standards with a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and a NOx reduction system (NRS). Two electric fans cool the radiator. A solar-powered battery maintainer and an optional engine heater help to ensure startup even on cold mornings. The engine has an oil change interval of 500 hours, but an optional extended service interval kit is available. Cat says that the genset has a leak-detection switch and can contain a spill of all engine fluids with a 10% extra safety margin.

    In Charge

The generator component of the XQ35 is a Cat LC Series unit in a 1514J-sized frame and a drip-proof, IP23 enclosure. It’s paired with Cat’s quick-responding integrated voltage regulator (IVR). The power distribution for the genset is selectable with a three-position switch. Outlets include three 250V, 50A twist-lock receptacles and two 120V, 20A duplex outlets with GFCI. Each receptacle has a dedicated circuit breaker.

The XQ35’s voltage ranges from 120 up to an optional 600 volts. Its power distribution sockets are selectable with a three-position switch. (Photo courtesy of Caterpillar.)

The Cat XQ35’s controller is an EMCP 4.2B set-mounted digital unit. It features a 3.8-in (97-mm) graphical display under a lockable, windowed door. Cat Connect telematics technology provides fleet management services for the XQ35, including remote monitoring, asset tracking, and geofencing.
