John Deere Unveils 700L PL40 Dedicated Pipelayer
Deere & Company’s new 700L PL40 Crawler is expressly designed for pipelaying applications. Built in Dubuque, Iowa, the 700L PL40 joins the 850L PL100, 1050K PL170, and 1050K PL220 in Deere’s family of PL-series machines. It brings more hydraulic power and peak torque to the job as compared to its base model, Deere says, and it has a lift capacity of 40,000 pounds (18 metric tons). The 700L PL40 features a bolt-on platform and mounting plates for easy sideboom installation, while its pipelayer controls are seamlessly integrated with its joystick.
“With the 700L PL40, we are delivering a purpose-built solution that instills confidence in the operator while also tackling challenges headfirst,” says John Deere Solutions Marketing Manager Matt Goedert. “There is no need for fabrication work, as the 700L PL40 comes ready to bolt on the customer’s choice of sideboom. From increased visibility to enhanced controllability, the 700L PL40 delivers the performance our customers need on tough jobs.”
Precision Control
A 135-horsepower (100-kilowatt) John Deere PowerTech PVS 6068 engine is at the heart of the 700L PL40 crawler. Eco Mode, Auto Idle, and Auto Shutdown features conserve fuel, while a radiator with large fin spacings and standard reversing fans provides reliable cooling. The hydraulic system is a closed-center, load-sensing design founded on a variable-displacement pump.
The 700L PL40 uses dual-path hydrostatic transmissions which, along with a neutral counter-rotate setting, provides precise travel and control without abruptness. The manufacturer made it easier to clean out the crawler’s tracks, and also upgraded its idler shims and preload springs for increased uptime.
The Deere 700L PL40 comes with a quiet cab or a canopy cab option. Both are optimized for driver comfort, high visibility, and easy entry and exit. The operator can use one hand to maneuver using the crawler’s electrohydraulic sideboom joystick with a proportional roller. The front console storage area of the operator station is set up to ease the installation of load-monitoring displays, if desired.
Telematics & Support
Machines in the PL lineup come with JDLink telematics service for five years. They also support Service ADVISOR Remote and other tools in the John Deere Connected Support suite.
