PGT Trucking Adds First Nikola Tre Battery-Electric Semitruck To Fleet
In early January, PGT Trucking, Inc. purchased its first Nikola Tre battery-electric vehicle (BEV) semitruck with plans to put it to work immediately on local, dedicated routes for a select customer. The acquisition makes PGT the first flatbed trucking company to actively grow its fleet with zero-emissions equipment, Nikola says. PGT’s transport fleet serves the steel, aluminum, construction, oil and gas, raw materials, and automotive industries. In October 2021, PGT signed a letter of intent to lease 100 Nikola Tre heavy-duty fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) to promote electric-drive heavy-duty transport. Those vehicles are to arrive later this year.
“PGT’s decision to place a Nikola Tre BEV immediately into operation is telling of their commitment to drive forward their ambitious corporate sustainability initiatives today,” says Michael Lohscheller, Nikola president and CEO. “We are extremely proud to partner with another well-respected industry leader by providing progressive zero-emission transportation solutions that are intended to improve safety, reduce costs and CO2 emissions, and improve overall total cost of ownership.”
About The Tre BEV
The Tre BEV is Class 8 cabover truck designed for short-haul metro-regional hauling. It has gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 82,000 pounds (37,195 kilograms), a maximum speed of 70 mph (113 km/h), and an estimated range of up to 330 miles (531 kilometers). The truck’s nine-pack battery has a combined total capacity of 733 kilowatt-hours, and its two electric motors provide 645 continuous horsepower (480 kilowatts). An 80% battery charge is possible in 160 minutes at 175 kW.
Established in 1981, PGT says its Nikola Tre BEV will help meet its customers’ demands for sustainable shipping solutions as well as align itself with their various green energy commitments. Nikola says PGT’s new zero-emissions equipment puts it on pace to reach a goal of cutting fleet carbon emissions by 35% by 2025.
