Volvo VNR Electric Brings Home The Bacon For Canadian Grocery Retailer
Loblaw Companies Limited, Canada’s largest grocery and pharmacy retailer with brands such as President’s Choice, No Name, No Frills, and Maxi, recently added two Volvo VNR Electric trucks to its fleet servicing stores in Montreal. The ultra-quiet, emissions-free trucks are ideal in congested metropolitan areas where reducing air and noise pollution is a priority. Loblaw plans to add more battery-electric trucks in the future to meet its emissions goals.
"We operate stores within 10 kilometers of 90% of Canadians, which means we run thousands of deliveries every single day and millions per year,” says Loblaw Chief Administrator Rob Wiebe. "Finding viable solutions to decarbonize our transportation fleet is critical, as we work to fight climate change. It’s thanks to the innovation and dependability of organizations like Volvo Trucks North America that we’ll be able to achieve this goal.”
The Volvo VNR Electric
The Class 8 electric truck was designed for local and regional distribution. Loblaw’s VNR Electrics are 6x4 tractors with a 6-battery pack configuration for a range of up to 442 kilometers (275 miles). The trucks will operate out of Loblaw’s distribution center in Boucherville, Quebec, and will cover around 200 km (124 mi) each day over two 8-hour shifts.
To keep its trucks moving, Loblaw installed four chargers, including a 175-kilowatt fast charger, which can fully charge the 565-kilowatt-hour batteries in approximately 90 minutes.
The VNR Electric has a drivetrain rated at 340 kW (455 horsepower) and up to 4,051 pounds-foot (5,492 newton-metres) of torque. Volvo’s 2-speed I-Shift automated transmission ensures smooth acceleration. The truck is also equipped with safety features such as Volvo Active Driver Assist to avoid forward collisions with the help of camera and radar technology and lane departure warning.
